After a poor night's rest, the children were always awakened at dawn to prepare themselves for an assortment of tedious and dangerous odd jobs. The couple did not work, so they sent Badger and Thistle to protect the cabin from angry wolverines, grow and gather food, chop firewood, and occasionally swindle a passerby for a few coins.
